What is it all about? I am Jim Fantone and I am here to sort it all out for you. Yes, I have done the footwork so you don’t have to. Cook, mechanic, restaurant manager, social worker, army sergeant, karate student, personal trainer, business owner. Did I forget anything? Oh yeah, father, husband (twice), and actor. My life as a guinea pig.

My evolution has been a fun journey, but I didn’t always think that. The one thing I know from my life experiences is I make the best of everything.  That is another story which you can read about if you are interested in an autobiography about me.

For now, we will talk exercise. This has got to be one of the most challenging aspects of life. We want to look like super models but it just doesn’t seem to work out that way (pun intended).  Why is it so hard to have a six-pack? What is the elusive ingredient to losing weight? How do “they” do it? Well, if you’re reading this, maybe, you’re ready for the warm firm facts.

Fantone Fitness Fun Fitness Facts!

#1. “Your stomach is about the size of both of your hands held out in front of you cupped together like a bowl. It’s your body’s fuel tank. It is the right size for your body. In a car, if you overfill your gas tank, it will spill out on the ground, wasting the gas. In your body, the fuel doesn’t spill out. The body saves it as FAT!” Make sure you’re not over-filling your tank.

#2. If you want to get in shape, take some time every day to do something physically challenging. Every day! That could be going to the gym, going for a run, riding your bike, yoga, aerobic class, push-ups, walking lunges, jumping jacks, toss a frisbee, or chase your cat or dog around. The key is to do something “Every Day”. Yes, every day. You can play every day, it’s OK.

#3. People always ask me “how do you get a six-pak?” The truth is everyone has the six-pack muscles. They are already a part of every body. You couldn’t move properly without them. The problem isn’t in the muscle, it’s in the “stuff” that’s covering the muscle. You guessed it, body-fat!” So the goal is to reduce body-fat between the skin and those lovely abs.  How to do that? Ahh, the million dollar question. If I had a buck for every time…anyway.

Here’s my “plan”. That’s what I call it. Time to get back on the “Plan”

Eat clean. Eat real foods, not processed. Soda is processed, get used to drinking water. Just do it! Eat single ingredient foods like vegetables, fruit, lean meats, eggs or egg whites. Eat nuts and seeds in moderation (and if you can’t do moderation, leave the nuts alone). If you are vegetarian, you know where to get your protein. Eat foods as they come from nature, not scientifically engineered products. And do not add salt! You’ll get used to it. You know this stuff. You keep hearing it over and over, but you don’t want to believe it. Well, it’s true. Eat healthy and exercise at least moderately, and I guarantee you will lose body-fat. If you do, those lovely six-pak muscles will be working their way to the surface. Maybe slowly, but one day, Pow! There they are. You’ve got a six-pack. If I can do it, so can you.

Love handlesare from loving junk food. Crunches won’t affect them. Only a better diet will. Oh yeah, and some exercise to burn calories will help too. Keep it simple.

After your workout is the best time to eat a high quality meal.  Your body is craving nutrition. Eat within 1 ½ hours after your workout for the best results.

Now Is The Only Time

Now is the time for preparation. Now is when I get ready for next summer. Did ya’ ever notice that every year, people start to get in shape in the spring, only to give up before they get there? Can you relate? Here’s why. It’s too late to get in shape in the spring! One must already be in shape in the spring to enjoy the spring…and summer! That’s it! That’s the secret. It’s very discouraging to work out and try to get in shape while you really want to be out in the park or at the beach showing off. So every year people start to think about working out in the spring and by summer they give up. Don’t be a statistic. You’re smarter than that! 917 657 5489 or jim@fantonefitness.com.

One Day at a Time!

One day at a time is a life saver. I don’t have to know how everything is going to turn out. I just have to breathe. I don’t really have to do that! It just happens. Wow, that is all I do, just breathe. If I do nothing else then I am still OK.

The great thing is, I don’t have to do anything. Nothing has the “have to” prefix, for me. Absolutely nothing! If I think I have to do something, I just change the wording for a more positive result. For example, if I think “I have to do something”, being mindful, I am aware I’m thinking that and I stop and make an adjustment to “I want to do it”. It works! I know what you’re thinking. What if I really, REALLY don’t want to do it? Guess what? I just don’t do it. Problem solved. I know there are people reading this who are thinking that it is unreasonable to just “not do” something that might be very important to me so I say again. The other option is to change the wording to, “I want to do it”. It works. It’s really not that complicated.

I want to face the obstacles in my life!

Either I am able to change the wording to create a more positive feeling, or I don’t do it. The key is to be mindful and vigilant so I can catch myself in the moment. One Day at a Time!

Feeling good today!

Feeling like a million bucks. Just like a man in mud! Me in mud!

What would I do if I couldn’t fly?

August 25th, marks 54 years since I was born. I have learned to adjust my life to fit my growing needs. How do you like that for positive thinking? Anyway, on to the subject of flying. I have spent my life working out and playing. One of my favorite things to do is low-level flying. Low-level flying is flight without assistance. It still feels like flying but there is no need for aircraft. Frisbee throwing and catching, jumping over fire and running down mountains are a couple of ways I love to fly.

As I get more experienced, I find that I need maintenance in order to be able to keep my flight status. Three things have become a daily treatment for my physical health.

One, I stretch out on a daily basis This is something I have learned is necessary in the last few years.

Two, I roll out on the foam roller. The foam roller massages and releases my muscles and the fascia around them. This is critical to my flexibility.

Three, I use a Foot Rubz ball to massage my feet.

I Live!

One thing “Time” always does,

Whatever “is” becomes what “was”

Remember the Thundering of last Thursday?

Today as my day begins I look back on the week.

So much has happened that I am reeling from the changes.

That’s why I try to enjoy life in each moment, remember to breathe, and live now!

I start today with a full heart and an empty mind. Anything is possible and everything is new.

Decision

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

Often attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, upon further investigation, it seems it was actually written by, William Hutchinson Murray. I don’t care who wrote it, I LIKE IT!

Loss

Today I’m thinking about “loss” in a different way. I feel a sense of loss today that I can live with. It starts out feeling empty and for a moment it hurts. If I am still, that moment passes. If I don’t try to hold onto it, it goes rather quickly. On the other hand, if I want to keep that feeling of loss, I can create attachments that keep it with me. For example, I feel the loss of a relationship and it hurts for a moment. That feeling is sadness in my gut. I begin to cry and that experience starts to tell me things like I’m losing a part of myself, I’m never going to have another relationship, I will be so alone, I have failed. I ask myself, what have I done to deserve this. That kind of reaction will undoubtedly create more pain and sadness.

But, as I said, I am experiencing loss in a different way today. It’s more like this; I am feeling sadness over the change in my relationship, I breathe and start to cry. Crying is, in my opinion, one of they truest forms of expression there is, so I am going to enjoy this cry. My heart is full, not empty, if I am crying. It feels full! I am letting out the pain of this loss. Is it pain? Yes, it hurts. I feel suddenly alone. Wait. I like being alone. I do. It allows me to reflect on the beauty of my life, which, if I look back at it I realize that the challenges I have faced in my life have always forced me to grow in ways I otherwise might never have. Now that feels less sad. In fact the feeling I now have is gratitude. I am grateful for all of the sad times and the losses in my life because they have given me growth. I have grown considerably over the course of my life, but never as much as when I have been hurting. I am grateful.

This is a true story. Life isn’t good, or bad. Life is Life. How I choose to experience life dictates the quality of my life. Deepak Chopra has a quote I use to remind me of this. “Because I accept life as life, in my world, nothing ever goes wrong.” I am grateful today. I am happy.Image

Sunday Fun-day

A friend recently commented on my Facebook page, saying that it was cool, and working out looks fun! Who would have thought? I would! Of course working out is fun. I get to move my body in an excited way to accomplish different activities all the while increasing my heart rate and respiration, sweating up a storm and expending calories and energy. That sounds like…well fun! Anyway, that comment made me realize that not everyone thinks working out is fun. So, check out these pics of fun workouts. I hope you are inspired to get out on this Fun-day Sunday and work out too. remember, it can be fun!

T.G.I.F.F.

Thank goodness it’s Flying Friday! I got to tell you, I’ve been looking forward to posting this for a while now. After a day of rest on Thundering Thursday, I am ready to fly high into today’s workout. I feel as though I can leap over any obstacle in my path. Why? Because I try. That’s really all it takes. Go for it. Sometimes I notice I’m feeling afraid of an event or situation that I’m approaching. I’ve recently decided to turn things around on “Fear”. Here is my new idea. I’m going to use “Fear” to my advantage and every time I realize I’m feeling “Fear”, I’m going to remind myself that “Fear” stands for “Feeling Energized and Ready”. Done! So go out and have some “Fear” on me. Enjoy!

Flying high over fear!

Rest and Recover

I work out very frequently. Sometimes I go for days on end working out every day. So when I get that feeling that I just need to sit, I do. Today is Thundering Thursday. I sat and experienced a beautiful thunderstorm from my window. Just sitting and breathing. Sometimes you the best workout is one that you don’t do. Take a day off. Enjoy!

Hammies!

Ever try to strengthen your hamstrings without weights? Here is a good exercise for hamstrings. Not only does it really challenge your hamstrings, but it works your glutes and core at the same time. Now, that’s my kind of exercise!

Ok, so for starters, get a 55 centimeter physio-ball and lie down on the floor with it. Put your heels and ankles on the ball and lift up into a bridge from shoulders to feet. Remember, the ball’s job is to throw you down on the floor. Don’t let it! Be ready! Once you get your balance, begin bending your knees and pulling the ball toward you.

Try to push your hips up as high as you can while pulling your feet and the ball in as far as you can. Then slowly return to the start position, but don’t go all the way down to the floor.

Start with a couple of reps if it’s very difficult. Keep practicing until you can do it for at least 15 reps, at least 2 sets.

Fun, huh?

Now, you must stretch your hamstrings every day. If you don’t have a trainer to do it for you, go to the bottom of the page and click on the link to the Stretch out Strap and buy one. You will thank me for it. It is an indispensable tool for stretching. And it’s cheap too.

Try harder Tuesdays!

Slipping up the hill, dragging the rock. Trying no matter how hard it is to pull yourself up the mountain of life, is what it’s all about. Find the joy in hard work! That’s the secret.

You’re welcome.

Stretch out strap

Wow, I would be seriously hurtin’ if it weren’t for my stretch out strap. There is no better way to get a hamstring stretch than this. Unless you have a trainer do it for you. This simple inexpensive tool has many uses, but hamstring stretching with it makes it worth ten times the cost. Scroll down and click on the picture at the bottom of the page and get yours. You’ll thank me for it.
