Push/Pull Tabata-Full Body Workout

So Here we are Fantone Fitness fitness buffs! This is a Tabata drill designed to work the upper body. Because we’re using the TRX and Bosu ball, we get the added value of an excellent core workout!

Hindsight is 2020. Back onna Plan!

Six pics! First two are from the beginning of January 2020. Gotta admit I have a sweet tooth and December of 2019 was a sweet tooth binge. Okay, I got that out of my system. Here we go starting off at 152 pounds and 15.2 % body fat. Then I got the flu. January was a really tough month. Travel to Ohio to see mom and while I’m there she passed away. Here’s to my sweet family for how wonderfully they cared for her in her last few months. I feel blessed to have been there to see her go and to see the love she got from everyone. So, we start again in February. The second two pics, from February 2nd, 148 pounds and 13.3 % body fat.  Finally starting to feel a bit better. And now for the last two most recent pics. March 2nd. 2020. 144 pounds and 12.4 % body fat. Moving a bit slower than normal this year. Stiil, I’m committed to staying the course and finishing strong. This year is the year of rebuilding. Oh yeah, I had my left shoulder replaced last May. Here we go! 61 is so much fun!

How’s it going so far? 2019?

Okay, people what’s happening? Are you in any way more fit than New Year’s day? Well, as you know it is my job to be in shape. So I’ve been working on it very diligently. I’m now down to 146 pounds, and 10.5% body fat. That’s 1.5% down in body fat and 6 pounds lighter. I feel so much better!!!I must admit, it hasn’t been easy or perfect, but I made a decision to stick to it, no matter what happened. I think I’ve eaten a bit too many nuts, though. I think I am turning into a nut. I have eaten a tree-full of apples and more than my share of blueberries. Anyway, I’m human and I need a treat now and then. These are my staples. I’m not a vegetarian, I eat more of a Paleo diet, with proteins vegetables, nuts and fruits. I’ve basically just cut out sugar and starchy carbs. Oh what a difference. I also have upped my workouts to almost every day. Sometimes I do 30 minutes of easy cardio, some days I’ll spin for 20 minutes using a high intensity interval style and other days, I push it hard with push ups, pull ups, jumping lunges, lunges, jumping squats, squats, kettlebell swings, Vipr, Bulgarian bag, RMT Club, and calisthenics combined all together in a massive Tabata style workout. It’s very challenging and fun!

So, how’s it going so far for you? 2019? Leave me a message describing your New Year.

Urban FitnessJim

by Jim Fantone, personal trainer

It’s just another day in the city. Not just any city though. We, here in New York City are fortunate to have opportunities on every corner and in every neighborhood for exercise.

First of all, we walk. A lot. I do anyway. It’s a choice to walk 20 blocks each way to my next client rather than take the bus or subway. If I do ride the subway, at the end of each ride is yet another opportunity. Subway stairs are notorious for taking your breath away. I see a set of stairs and I see quads and glutes in action! Take two steps at a time and I see extreme walking lunges. Man, that feels good. A little bit of cardio too. Just don’t stop right at the top please. Don’t get me started!
I find exercise everywhere. As I’m walking up Broadway toward home, I encounter people walking haphazardly across the sidewalk. My friend calls them Diagonerds. You know those people who seem to be angling to the left until you try to go around to the right, and just then they change tactics and begin to go to the right, right in front of you! Back and forth they go. Almost like they’re blocking for you. My take on this is they are my offensive line and I am a running back following my blocking until we get clear of the oncoming traffic (the tacklers) and then I don’t need them anymore and I shoot the gap and fly past them. Thank you!
With so many obstacles and challenges in a city like this, there is no excuse for not exercising. None! Use a backpack so your shoulders are even and the weight of your stuff is not hanging off to one side and get out there and move! Raining? Snowing? It just adds resistance to the exercise. Use the energy to navigate rather than complain. Let’s use our bodies the way they were meant to be used. Moving! You will feel better, guaranteed.

Lean-ing Into 60- My Article in The Neighborhood Trainers April Newsletter

JamesLean-ing Into 60!

Everybody is getting older. Obvious, right? Not everybody is getting older in
the same way. Also, obvious, right?
Yes, I think so. There are those who are telling you about how they’re getting older all the time! They are actually complaining about it. When they forget something, they say something like “my mind ain’t what it used to be”, as if anything is. You might hear “Oh, I’m getting fat in my old age”.
Yet, there are others who are embracing their evolution.
Exercising consistently and eating right. They are sharing their wisdom with the world instead of whining about getting older.
Getting older isn’t an option, enjoying it is.
I say lean into it! Like everything else, if you make the best of it, you feel better about it. It’s the same with getting older. You must try to enjoy it in order the feel better about it.
How do you do that? The money question. It’s an attitude change. That’s all. Choose to do it. Go ahead, try. Say it with me. “I love getting older”.
It is a choice. I exercise every day. I eat small healthy meals. But most of all I choose to lean into getting older rather than fight it.

I exercise every day. Unless I don’t. But rather than planning to exercise once or twice a week, I plan to do it every day! Then, when I miss a day, I don’t have to beat myself up about it and give up. I just resume the next day.
Say it with me, go ahead. “I exercise every day!” Don’t worry about it if it’s not true yet. Just exercise today and you’re off to a great start. Lean into it!
By now you’re starting to notice a trend. It’s all about attitude. Replace your old thinking with the new. By old thinking, I mean the old phrases and figures of speech that you use without even thinking about whether they are true or not. Instead of complaining about the weather, try enjoying it. No matter what it is. Go ahead, try it. Say it with me, “I love this freezing rain!”
If you’re willing to try this approach, I think you’ll find it exhilarating and full of possibilities. It can free up your mind and your day from all of the self-defeating habits that you aren’t even aware of.
It can open you up for something new. Like Lean-ing into 60! Or if you’re younger than I am, leaning into your own beautiful future! Try it!

60 is The New Sexy

We all know by now that abs are created in the kitchen, not the gym. So don’t over-do it this year living it up on stuffing and pie. Or if your like me, and you wait all year to eat pumpkin pie, then I say live it up for the holiday and get back on the plan right away! Oh yeah and try working out every day!

Abs in the Kitchen

Abs are created in the kitchen!

We’re 12 weeks into 2017. Are you ready for Spring?

On January 2nd My body fat percentage was 11.4 and I weighed 150.6 pounds.

Not bad for a 58 year old man, right?

12 Weeks later after many Tabata drills and a clean diet, I am pleased to say I have accomplished the mission!

March 31st. 8.5% body fat. 140.8 pounds.

I did not starve myself, on the contrary, I ate 3 to 4 meals every day and occasionally I squeezed in a fifth.

So, in three months I dropped nearly 10 pounds and decreased my body fat by nearly 3 percent.

I’d like to point out that to lose weight in a healthy way, requires a healthy lifestyle. That means taking the time to eat right and exercise regularly.

And it’s fun!

That’s it! There are no quick fixes or special tricks to being fit. It takes work and discipline.

It’s not for everybody. Thanks for watching.

Facts and Myths about Fitness. The Fitness Industry vs Real Fitness

The world of fitness is full of misleading advice, broken promises and disappointment. Have you ever wondered why?  The world of true fitness and the fitness industry are two very different things. Sounds confusing right? It is, it’s designed by the fitness industry to be that way. Now that they have you confused, they can sell you a product to fix you. Sounds great, right? Except it NEVER works. I said NEVER!. That’s right, it never works. You can’t get fit simply by using a product.  All you will do is waste your money. I know first hand, I did it for years. I’ve done the dirty work so you don’t have to.

The only way to get in shape is to exercise regularly and eat in a healthy way. I am going to repeat that, but not here. I will repeat that to every client and everyone who asks me about getting in shape. Forever! The fitness industry and the supplement industry are just that. Industry. They are selling supplements. They are selling fitness. Remember back when I said you can’t get fit by using a product? Well unless the industry is selling you workouts, you won’t succeed buying their product. If on the other hand they are selling you workouts and instruction, motivation and expertise, then you might succeed.

Which brings me to my point. Spend your money on INSTRUCTION, MOTIVATION AND EXPERTISE! A good personal trainer can change your life! You might think I’m a bit biased being a personal trainer myself. So maybe I am. I have been training people for over 20 years. I know not all trainers are the same. And not every trainer will change your life for the better. Find one with many years of experience. Make sure they are certified and have CPR training and liability insurance. That is critical. Any trainer who doesn’t meet these few requirements, isn’t in business as a trainer. They are part of a fitness industry that is ripping you off.

If money issues keep you from working with a trainer, don’t give up. Negotiate. That’s right I said it, negotiate. A real fitness professional will want you to workout with him or her rather that turn you away because you can’t afford it. When it comes to getting fit and money, there will always be issues. Don’t get caught up in the supplement world thinking you can buy fitness there, you can’t. Do yourself a favor and take care of yourself. Spend you hard earned money on a personal trainer who truly wants you to get fit and stay fit for the rest of your life!srpa2cropped-nuvision_action_image_storefront_12759352.jpgIMG_4882

Ok, so you’re getting older. Aren’t we all?

Here’s what I think about getting older.

You have more life experience than younger people.
You’ve been where they are, they haven’t been where you are yet.
You get to do what you want.
You can change your mind over and over.
You realize you don’t know everything.
You realize nobody knows everything.
You realize you don’t need to know everything.
Even if you make mistakes, you get another chance.
With all that practice, you’re bound to get better.
There’s no better way to get more wisdom.
There’s more time to get in better shape.
It’s a great way to live.
And most importantly, you’re alive!
Do me a favor. Have some fun!

Get off your butt!

Action creates energy!

The best way to feel more energetic is to burn more energy. Sounds crazy but those of you who exercise regularly know that during times of consistent exercise you feel more energy. Try stopping for a week or two and you’ll feel a slower pace and less energy. Go back to your exercise routine and you’re back in the groove, feeling better in a matter of a couple of workouts.

So, if you’re feeling down for any reason and you want to get back to your old self, get back to the gym. Go for a run. Play Frisbee in the park. Anything that gets your butt off the chair and your feet on the move. You know it’s true. All you got to do is DO IT!

Every action has a reaction. Get yours.

Rest and Recovery

Rest and recovery.

Most people run themselves ragged. I like to rest whenever I can. I believe that rest and sleep are the one thing we take for granted that can have a huge impact on our health. If you’re a busy person and you must work many hours each day, I feel for you. That’s not my style. I work just a few hours each day and still I need my beauty rest.

Rest helps your body repair itself. At the cellular level you need recovery. This is not a preference thing. Some people say they only need 4 hours of sleep and they are just fine. Well they may feel fine for now. If that becomes a regular pattern they run the risk of lowering their immune system as well as their metabolism. In order to function properly, the body needs rest. Sleep is best, but I find even just sitting or lying down for a while allows my body to recover.

I am usually very energetic but sometimes I just feel a little less enthusiastic about getting up and getting going. That is a sign for me to take note and get a little more rest than usual. One has to learn how to hear what the body is saying. All of your aches and pains are telling you something. It may not be a big deal, but it is important to get to know when you should pay attention and adjust your activity, and when to just be aware. When you are feeling tired, you are tired and to ignore that on a regular basis is asking for trouble.

Learn to listen, listen to learn.
